Lavender comes from the word lavare, which means "to wash". Lavender is the most versatile of all of the essential oils, and a common saying in aromatherapy is, "When in doubt, use lavender." It is also the most widely studied essential oil, and studies suggest it has a number of properties, including anti-anxiety, anti-microbial, anti-stress, anti-insomnia, the reduction of cortisol (stress hormone) levels in the body and many other uses.
